İYİ Party Group Deputy Chairman Turhan Çömez stated, "The fire, uncertainty, and chaotic environment in the Middle East carry the risk of bringing a new and heavy burden of refugees."
In his assessment to Sözcü, Çömez stated, “Turkey initiated the process of removing mines from its borders with the Ottawa Treaty it signed in 2003. First, the mines on our southern border were cleared, and then those on our eastern border were cleared with 21 million dollars received from the European Union,” and added the following:
ISRAEL TRIGGERS MIGRATION
“Israeli attacks pose a new refugee risk for Turkey. Israel is specifically bombing agricultural lands in Gaza so that those who survive face a food crisis and are forced to migrate.
Israel wants Palestinians in Gaza to be sent to Jordan or Turkey. To achieve this, it even offered to pay off Egypt's foreign debt.
There are 1.5 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon as well. Following the Israeli attacks, 300 thousand have returned to their country, but there is a risk of them crossing into Turkey from our southern border.
There are currently more than 4 million Afghan refugees in Iran. The possibility of them crossing the border and coming to Turkey is strengthening; if Israel conducts an airstrike on Iran, these Afghans could come to Turkey.
We are not sure how farsighted and prepared the government is on this matter.”
