Frightening statements have come from Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki regarding the seismic activity that has been ongoing in the Aegean Sea for days. Speaking to the ANKA News Agency, Moriwaki pointed out that the intensity of the earthquakes is gradually increasing.
Reminding that more than 70 thousand people are living in container cities in Adıyaman, Moriwaki said, "Of course, it is necessary to walk in this region; there are prefabricated houses. We need to solve this now so that everyone's mental health is good." Issuing a warning for potential earthquakes that could occur in İzmir and the Marmara Region, he added, "The problems of Istanbul need to be solved."
TSUNAMI WARNING ISSUED!
Issuing a tsunami warning, Moriwaki said the following:
"There have been more than 400 earthquakes in one week. Today, for example, there were earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.8 and 5.1; it is gradually increasing. 170 kilometers west of Bodrum in the Aegean, on the Greek side... If it continues like this, a large earthquake of 7 or 7.5 can be expected. The effect of the earthquake itself is not very high in Turkey, but a tsunami could come. Normally, for Turkey itself on the fault line, it could be said to be 1 meter, at worst 3 meters, but because this Greek side is very close, a larger tsunami of 5 meters could come. If they feel the earthquake or hear about it, they should flee 5 meters higher, that is, 1-2 floors higher."
REMINDED OF URBAN TRANSFORMATION
Reminding that 2 years have passed since the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, Moriwaki emphasized urban transformation.
Moriwaki continued his words as follows:
"Of course, urban transformation needs to be done, but while doing urban transformation, while rebuilding, if it is on the plains, that is, if the ground is soft, it should not be built higher than 4 floors. You already have to spend money to improve the ground. If you go to a slightly higher place, then the ground is good. Then it is necessary to use raft foundations/bored piles. Therefore, it is better to build as high as possible. If the ground is good at higher elevations, 7, 10, or 15 floors can be built; there is no problem."
Drawing attention to potential earthquakes that could occur in the Marmara Region and İzmir, Moriwaki stated that they had issued warnings before and said, "The problems of Istanbul need to be solved."
