Malawi Vice President Chilima and the 9 people accompanying him lost their lives in a plane crash. On May 19, 2024, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's helicopter had also crashed. Chilima thus became the 23rd head of state to lose his life in an aviation accident.

Malawian Vice President Chilima and 9 others on the same plane lost their lives as a result of the plane crash. The wreckage of the military aircraft carrying the 51-year-old Chilima was found in a mountainous region in the north of the country after search efforts that lasted more than a day.
Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera stated in a speech broadcast live on state television that there were no survivors of the crash. Former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri was also on board the plane.
Furthermore, Malawian Vice President Chilima became the 23rd head of state to lose their life in an aviation accident.
