29-year-old Şakir Karakaya organized an event with his colleagues at a recreation area in the central Çukurova district to propose to his 26-year-old girlfriend, Nazlı Gümüş.
As the couple arrived at the recreation area with their colleagues, a person on a motorcycle approached Şakir Karakaya, and a scuffle broke out between the two. During the incident, Karakaya, who moved behind a car, pretended to be shot and poured food coloring over himself.
His girlfriend, Nazlı Gümüş, rushed to help Karakaya, who had collapsed to the ground as part of the surprise. In a state of panic, Gümüş was met with a marriage proposal as Karakaya pulled a ring from his pocket.
A stunned Gümüş accepted the proposal.
BYSTANDERS CALLED THE POLICE
However, bystanders who heard the firecracker that went off during the scene mistook it for a gunshot and reported the situation to the police. Teams arriving at the scene took the couple and their friends to the police station. After giving their statements at the station, the couple was released.
"WE GAVE OUR STATEMENTS AND LEFT"
Speaking to reporters, Şakir Karakaya explained that his girlfriend had wanted an adrenaline-filled marriage proposal for years, saying, "Nazlı has been my girlfriend for 14 years, my childhood sweetheart. She never wanted a romantic proposal since we were kids. She wanted adrenaline, she wanted fear. So I came up with this plan. It turned out great, we got a 'yes' to the proposal. I pretended to fight with my friends and acted as if I was shot, then threw myself to the ground. We wanted it to sound like a gunshot, so we used a firecracker.
We did it behind the car and I lay on the ground. We used food coloring for the blood. People around us thought it was real. We acted so well that they probably thought it was real and filed a complaint. The police came and said they were taking us to the station due to the complaint. We gave our statements and left," he said.
"GLAD I SAID YES"
Nazlı Gümüş stated that the marriage proposal was just as she had dreamed, saying, "It was a bad situation to experience, but I received the marriage proposal I had always dreamed of. I am very happy. I'm glad I said yes."
