Naci Görür issues warning for Marmara following earthquake in Çanakkale

According to AFAD data, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake occurred in the Ezine district of Çanakkale at 17:39 yesterday.

The earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, caused brief panic.

The AFAD Earthquake Department announced the depth of the tremor as 10.2 kilometers.

The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute reported the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.9.

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür issued a warning regarding the Ezine earthquake on his social media account.

"A 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in Bahçeli-Ezine/Çanakkale. The earthquake took place in the Evciler Fault Zone, south of Bayramiç. This zone belongs to the middle branch of the North Anatolian Fault (NAF). This branch and the southern branch of the NAF are segments that accumulate energy slowly. For this reason, we expect earthquakes later. For now, the nearest earthquake will be within the Marmara region.

I am issuing a warning due to this Çanakkale earthquake. The government, the opposition, and the public, in particular, must realize this. Almost every part of this country is covered by a network of fault lines. Any region of the country could be subjected to a major earthquake at any time, and thousands of our people could die. This is a very serious possibility.

As for that, never mind the characteristics, location, size, or when the faults will produce an earthquake. Let the scientists think about that. You should think about how to make your city and the entire country earthquake-resilient.

If you work together as a fist with the government, the opposition, and the public, this is possible. In earthquake-resilient countries, when earthquakes of the magnitude we experience occur, only a few people die by chance; in our country, tens of thousands die. This does not suit us; let us make our country earthquake-resilient. This is possible."
