Narin's family issues statement blaming journalists: 'Irreparable victimization'
The investigation into the murder of eight-year-old Narin Güran in the village of Tavşantepe in Diyarbakır continues. The Güran family has issued a written statement regarding the news reports and social media posts concerning the murder of Narin, for which 12 people, including her mother, brother, uncles, and relatives, are currently in custody.

Stating that they are making this announcement to inform the public following reports published in some media outlets and on social media on October 6, 2024, claiming that "it has been confirmed that Narin Güran was murdered in her father's house," the Güran family emphasized that "finding the murderer or murderers of the murdered Narin, ensuring they are punished with the highest possible penalty, and the realization of justice are their primary goals."
'ATTACK ON FAMILY HONOR'
In a statement that included the phrases, "While we are in deep sorrow and mourning over losing our daughter Narin as a result of a heinous incident, baseless and completely untrue reports are being made through social media and the press, and attacks are being carried out against the honor of the family, especially the women," it was stated that, "Ignoring the deep and indescribable pain our family is experiencing, it has been determined that some social media influencers are continuing to heartlessly produce and spread untrue news out of a desire to increase their follower and view counts, and a journalist is doing so out of a desire to become popular over this painful event, and the necessary criminal complaints have been filed against these individuals."
'IT HAS CREATED IRREPARABLE GRIEVANCE'
In the statement, which included the phrase "attacks directed at the honor and dignity of individuals through print, visual media, and social media have created irreparable grievances," the following was noted:
“It is beyond doubt that for the satisfaction of the public conscience, including our own family, and for the manifestation of justice, the questions of 'who or whom our daughter Narin was killed by and why she was killed' must be clarified with concrete evidence that leaves no room for doubt, and the perpetrator or perpetrators of the incident must be punished in the most severe manner. We extend our gratitude to everyone who shares in the pain our family is experiencing due to the murder of our daughter Narin, who have embraced Narin as if she were their own daughter, who carry her pain in their hearts, and who have expressed their opinions in good faith while following the investigation to help shed light on the incident.”
It has been observed that individuals are being declared guilty in advance based on prejudices lacking concrete evidence, that disproportionate and insulting language is being used constantly, that attempts are being made to influence the investigation file through social media and the press, and that abstract scenarios without evidence are being fabricated.
In addition to the grief of a family that has lost their child, the ruthless attacks on individuals' honor and dignity through print and visual media and social media, using misinformation, have created grievances that are impossible to compensate.
'PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE' DETAIL
In the statement, which touches upon the 'presumption of innocence,' it is noted that "until a final verdict is reached by an independent judiciary, the right of individuals not to be stigmatized must be respected, they must not be declared guilty based on prejudices, and attacks on their honor and dignity must be avoided." The statement dated October 6, 2024, reads, "It has been confirmed that Narin Güran was murdered in her father's house."
It has been stated by the authorities during a meeting between the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and our lawyers that reports claiming "a report regarding DNA analysis and narrowed-down HTS records has been added to the investigation file" are untrue.
In our application to the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office through our lawyers to prevent disinformation, it was stated: 'We expect a positive response to our request for the public to be informed by the authorized authorities, and we respectfully announce to the public that baseless news and posts not made directly by the authorized authorities should not be given credence.'
