While the 2023-24 season was underway, it was announced that under the new foreign player rule, the number of foreign-national players allowed to be registered on the A-Team list of Süper Lig clubs would be reduced from 14 to 12 for three seasons, and then to 11 for the following two seasons.

The first foreign player rule in our country began in the 1971-72 season. With this season, a requirement was introduced that foreign football players coming to Turkey must not be over the age of 25.

In the following years, there were a number of changes to the rule. The foreign player rule was set at 2 in the 1977-78 season, 3 in the 1989-90 season, 3+1 in the 1996-97 season, and 5 in the 1998-99 season.
