No one wanted to defend Geçti, who martyred police officer Şeyda Yılmaz: Lawyers withdrew from the case!

The trial of Yunus Emre Geçti, who martyred police officer Şeyda Yılmaz while trying to escape from police in Istanbul's Ümraniye district on September 23, has begun.

LAWYERS WITHDREW FROM THE CASE

The lawyers appointed by the bar association for Geçti, who is being tried for 5 separate crimes with a request for an aggravated life sentence and up to 50 years in prison, withdrew from the case.

While the defendant Yunus Emre Geçti connected to the hearing held at the Anatolian 26th High Criminal Court via the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS) from the Erzincan Closed Prison where he is detained, the martyred police officer Şeyda Yılmaz's husband, Semih Yılmaz, and her family were present in the courtroom.

"ARE YOU GOING TO SENTENCE ME?"

During the identity verification, Geçti stated that he was single but had a 5-month-old baby, saying, "I finished high school, I was going to start an internship at the university. I couldn't start because of this situation. I am a technician. I have no criminal record."

The presiding judge stated that the lawyers appointed by the bar association for the defendant had submitted a resignation petition, saying, "We will request a lawyer from the bar association again. For this reason, we cannot take your defense." The defendant replied, "If I cannot make a defense, how will I be tried? They made me give a statement at the police station. I want to defend myself. Are you going to sentence me?"

The presiding judge stated, "We cannot reach any verdict without taking your defense."

THE HANDCUFFS BROKE

The complainant K.H.S., another police officer injured by Yunus Emre Geçti on the day of the incident, described what happened that day in his testimony as follows:

“I came to the police station for the night shift. While the shift change was taking place, Yunus Emre Geçti arrived at the station in handcuffs. After taking the report and conducting the necessary interviews, I transferred it to the duty prosecutor and proceeded to take his statement.

I took the statements of Doğukan and Yunus Emre. While I was in the registry room, my fellow police officer came and said that Yunus had escaped. They had gone out as a team to search for him. We went to the room to check the cameras. The commissioner said, 'Go out with Şeyda and search.'

"HE TOOK THE WEAPON FROM MY WAIST WHILE I WAS TRYING TO HOLD HIM"

His mother said he might be at the tobacco shop. When we went, I saw Yunus, and he started to run. When I caught him, he started begging, and a scuffle broke out between us. Şeyda was by my side when I tried to handcuff him. Şeyda gave me the handcuffs, and while I was trying to put them on, the handcuffs broke. While I was holding the defendant, he took the weapon from my waist.

He fired while I was holding the tip of the barrel so he wouldn't shoot at the citizens, and I was shot in the hand. I told Şeyda to take cover.

I heard gunshots a few times. I also took cover for self-defense. The defendant escaped.

When I went to Şeyda, she was lying motionless. When I first saw her, she was breathing. We took her to the hospital. My treatment is still ongoing.”

LEARNED HIS WIFE WAS SHOT OVER THE POLICE RADIO

Martyred Şeyda Yılmaz's husband, Semih Yılmaz, stated that he is a police officer serving in Sivas and said, "On the day of the incident, while I was performing my duty, an announcement came over the radio that police officers had been injured.

I called my wife, but she didn't answer my calls. We set off, and my friend told me that the person who was shot was my wife. We went through a 2-3 hour surgery process. I am filing a complaint against anyone who has negligence in the incident."

DEFENDANT'S MOTHER: "WHY IS A CHILD WITH 26 CRIMINAL FILES WALKING AROUND OUTSIDE?"

Defendant Yunus Emre Geçti's mother, Pınar Geçti, said the following in her testimony:

“I have a child who is a substance addict. Why is a child with 26 criminal files walking around outside? I am at a loss for words. I called on the day of the incident and went to the police station. When I went to the station in the evening to bring food, Yunus was brought to me without handcuffs. He asked the police, 'Can I smoke?' When the police said 'no,' he escaped down the stairs.

While I was in the car with the police officers, Ms. Şeyda asked, 'Where is your child?' and I said he might be in the neighborhood. When we went, he was there, but they couldn't restrain him. I took two bullets.”

THE HEARING WAS ADJOURNED

The court panel, which announced its interim decision, decided to continue the detention of the detained defendant Yunus Emre Geçti. The court, which wrote to the bar association for the appointment of a lawyer, adjourned the hearing.
