Physics teacher claimed to have developed a chip to prevent turbulence and defrauded everyone: The court's decision surprised everyone

New details have emerged in a fraud case that shocked Turkey. Physics teacher Çiğdem İlgün scammed many people, from her relatives to her students, by claiming she had developed a "chip that prevents turbulence on airplanes." The fact that one of her victims was a student named Doğukan K., whom she tutored at a private course, revealed the extent of the incident.

SHE EVEN SCAMMED HER STUDENT

According to the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Çiğdem İlgün messaged her student Doğukan K., telling him she had produced a chip and that investing in this project would yield a 3-fold return. Introducing herself as a lecturer at Marmara University, İlgün claimed she was doing this to support students. Doğukan K. sent 40 thousand liras but did not receive the promised earnings. Suspicious, the young man called Marmara University and learned that İlgün did not work at the institution. When he could not get his money back, he realized he had been scammed and filed a complaint.

Testifying at the prosecutor's office, Çiğdem İlgün said she had produced an optical device that prevents turbulence and was selling chips to investors abroad. Claiming that she earned money due to exchange rate differences, İlgün stated that the payment process was delayed due to reasons originating from the other party. She claimed she would pay her student 100 thousand liras, but these claims were refuted by evidence.

PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE ISSUED A SENTENCE

The prosecutor's office determined that İlgün made deceptive statements to collect money and that other victims had been deceived in a similar manner. A prison sentence of up to 5 years was requested for the crime of "fraud."

The court stated that the defendant collected money with promises and failed to make payments, sentencing İlgün to 1 year in prison. The court did not apply any reduction or deferral to the sentence, citing the manner in which the crime was committed, the failure to compensate for the damages, and the need for deterrence.

SHE STARTED WITH HER INNER CIRCLE

According to the prosecutor's file, it was stated that Çiğdem İlgün gained trust by telling her victims she was a lecturer at Marmara University and obtained financial gain under the guise of supporting the project. Victim Doğukan K. expressed his grievance by saying, "I trusted her because she was my teacher, but I was scammed."
