Remarkable 'leftist' overture from the Palace: Seeking support for a new constitution

Presidential Advisor Mehmet Uçum has added a new piece to his writings on the agenda via his social media account. In his article titled "PATRIOTIC LEFT AND A TURKEY WITHOUT TERROR!", Uçum requested support from the left for the ongoing process and the new constitution. Stating that the name of the left is being exploited, Uçum listed the exploited left-wing movements as follows:

Stating that the list goes on, Uçum argued that patriotic leftism "requires supporting the goal of a Turkey without terror."

Exploitation of the Name of the Left!

The definition of leftism has reached such a point that many ideological deviations and opposing movements, which are fundamentally contrary to the principles of the existence of the left, have been marketed as leftism. If we look at the prominent ones, we can list the names of the movements that exploit leftism as follows:

Liberal leftism

Neo-liberal leftism

Westernist leftism

Funded leftism

Globalist leftism

Non-national leftism

Racist leftism

Anti-state leftism

Anti-human leftism

Genderless leftism

Archaic dogmatic leftism

Depending on the situation and context, this list goes on. Some of these deviant movements emerged intertwined, while others emerged alone. It is seen that all of them have more or less a following and are defended as the true left. However, all of these are fake leftism. They are deviant movements that exploit the name of the left.

In truth, one cannot be on the left while taking a stance against the history, values, and beliefs of the country and society in which one lives. Leftism cannot be practiced without defending social justice. The left cannot stand side-by-side with the rule of elites. One cannot defend animal rights in the name of the left by being hostile to humans or ignoring the protection of humans, nor can one defend another right (!) by rejecting human nature. One cannot pose as a leftist or a libertarian by acting as a spokesperson for capital. Furthermore, instead of embracing the national state and striving to exert influence with leftist ideas, glorifying opposition to the national state is not leftism, but rather hostility toward the country.

Being a Patriotic Left Democrat!

When viewed through the lenses of commitment to the country (patriotism), social justice (left-wing social policies), and the will of the people (democracy), it is understood that the prominent fundamental feature of today's leftism is defending patriotic left democracy.

Again, indigenous left-wing approaches such as upholding constructive traditions, values of faith, the history of the country, and the political, social, cultural, and legal accumulation of the country have turned into the most functioning elements of today's left-wing worldview.

Supporting public ownership, the appropriate use of public property, and social policies, as well as being in favor of full independence and being anti-imperialist, are always among the most important distinguishing features of the left.

As for struggling against every kind of harmful result that capitalism creates for nations and humanity, this struggle is the most important duty of the left in this period, as it has been in every period.

Taking all these into account, mainstream leftism today can be defined as being a patriotic left democrat.

A Turkey Without Terror and a New Constitution!

Eliminating the existence of violence—whether as terrorism or in the form of social and individual violence—from the lives of countries, society, and the individual is an important left-wing perspective today. For this reason, in terms of the historical period Turkey is experiencing, patriotic leftism requires unconditional support for the goal of a Turkey without terror. Having the slightest doubt about this contradicts the patriotic left-wing perspective.

Demanding democracy and legal reforms that will strengthen the will of the people and fully guarantee national unity, and participating in reform processes, is one of the fundamental criteria of being a patriotic left democrat today. Therefore, taking part in and contributing to the new constitution process, which is expected and desired to be prepared with the broadest social and political consensus, is the historical duty of all patriotic left-wing democratic circles in Turkey.
