The funeral prayer for Günay, who lost his life due to a heart attack in Skopje, Macedonia, was held at the Atiye-Ali Çiçek Mosque following the noon prayer.
Due to the rainy weather, the funeral prayer was held inside the mosque. After the coffin was brought to the mosque, Onur Günay's wife, İmran Kübra Günay, and some of his relatives embraced the coffin.
In addition to CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, several members of parliament, mayors, and party members attended the funeral prayer.
Speaking upon invitation before the funeral prayer, Özel stated that the late Onur Günay was diabetic but continued to work for the party despite his condition.
Explaining that during his time as the CHP group deputy chairman, Onur Günay had gifted him a photograph taken during the Soma trial process and another taken on the day Ekrem İmamoğlu received his mandate, Özel said he had hung these photos, which represent his saddest and happiest moments, in his office.
Noting that those photos will continue to hang there, Özel said, "It is very difficult. He entrusted a 3-year-old child to his mother, his father, İmran, and all of us... Fortunately, he exists; we will look at him and remember Onur. He will grow up and take Onur's place.
Ahmet will now take on the responsibility of being the eldest son of the house, the only child. We will all be in solidarity with them. This pain is not a pain that can be carried in any other way. The Günay family is laying their son to rest today, but let them know that as the child of Turkey's largest family, we all hold Onur's memory to our hearts."
Günay's body was laid to rest at the Güzelbahçe Yelki Cemetery.
