The UK-based news agency Reuters reported the call with the following words: "Öcalan has called on the PKK to lay down its arms in a move that could end its 40-year conflict with Ankara and have far-reaching political and security consequences for the region."

CNN: A HISTORIC MOVE

The call to lay down arms also dominated the agenda of the American press.

CNN International wrote, "According to the statement, Abdullah Öcalan has asked his party to 'lay down arms' and dissolve itself in a historic move."

The report included the following statement: "By asking the PKK to lay down their arms and dissolve the group, Öcalan has raised the possibility of ending a decades-long conflict with Turkey that is estimated to have led to the deaths of at least 40,000 people."

AL JAZEERA: HISTORIC ANNOUNCEMENT

The Arab press also had its eyes on the DEM Party's statement.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera headlined its report: "Historic announcement. Öcalan has ordered the closure of the PKK and the laying down of arms."
