The femicides in Istanbul's Fatih district have become a major issue on Turkey's agenda. 19-year-old Semih Çelik brutally murdered Ayşenur Halil and İkbal Uzuner.
Semih Çelik, who climbed the walls of Edirnekapı, decapitated İkbal Uzuner, whom he had murdered, and threw her head down. The murder suspect then put a rope around his neck and jumped from the walls, committing suicide.
Following the brutal murders that have shaken Turkey, the testimony of Adem Çelik, the father of the killer Semih Çelik, has emerged.
According to the report by Yunus Emre Kavak from Sabah, Adem Çelik stated the following in his testimony:
"THE TEACHER CALLED US AND SAID, 'HE SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THAT GIRL'"
"I have a son and a daughter. We live in my father-in-law's house. Before the pandemic, when Semih was in his junior year of high school, his teacher called us in and, mentioning a friend of his, said, 'He should stay away from her.'"
"HE WAS HURRIEDLY CLOSING HIS COMPUTER"
He was constantly spending time at home with the computer I had bought for Semih at that time. Whenever I, his mother, or his sister entered his room, he would immediately close his computer in a panic. Since the computer was password-protected, we could not check what he was doing or who he was talking to.
Later, he told us he wouldn't study. When I asked him, 'Why do you think that way?', he would say, 'What will happen if I study and become a big man, or a scientist?' He finished high school through distance education.
"YOUR SON HAS BRAINWASHED MY DAUGHTER, THEY ARE GOING TO COMMIT SUICIDE TOGETHER"
Around noon on March 1, 2022, the mother of Semih's school friend, İkbal Uzuner, called my wife and said, 'Your son has brainwashed my daughter, they are going to commit suicide together.' That same evening, we learned that Semih had attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the left chest area. He gave a statement regarding this incident at the Juvenile Bureau. Due to this event, he was examined at Bakırköy Sadi Konuk Hospital. He was hospitalized there for 3 weeks for psychological medication treatment.
"HE WANTED TO BE A BUTCHER"
After a while, he wanted to be a butcher. He started working at a business in Rami Square. He learned the trade. Most recently, he was working in Bayrampaşa. He quit about 9 months ago. He had gold savings at home. He was meeting his needs by selling them.
"THEY WERE USING DRUGS"
They had been using drugs for 2 years. I could tell from their behavioral changes and mood disorders. But I had no information about where or how they obtained the drugs.
"I SAW DEVIL-LIKE DRAWINGS IN HIS ROOM"
About a year ago, when I entered Semih's room, I saw charcoal drawings he had made that resembled devils, which were frightening to the human psyche. When we asked Semih what these pictures were, he would not give us any further explanation, saying, 'You wouldn't understand, our thought structures are different.'
"HE BROKE UP WITH İKBAL AND STARTED DATING AYŞENUR"
We were not pressing him on it. After the suicide attempt I mentioned above, Semih broke up with İkbal Uzuner. About a year ago, Semih started dating a girl named Ayşenur Halil, a classmate from the high school he had dropped out of.
Ayşenur would come to our residence on Mondays. Between 12:00 and 17:00, Semih and Ayşenur would spend time alone at home. They would also meet outside.
"ON THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT, HE TOLD ME 'DON'T YOU DARE COME HOME'"
Semih went to Ankara with his older sister and mother, where his sister had been accepted into university. His mother stayed there, and Semih came back. We lived together in the house for about a week. When I went to work, Semih would spend time alone at home with his phone. He only went out for his needs. He wouldn't go out to get fresh air.
On the day of the incident, Friday, October 4, I woke up at my residence around 05:30. I left the house, and around 10:44 in the morning, I called my son and said to Semih, 'Son, I will be home late tonight because of work.' He replied, 'Ayşenur is at home, don't you dare come home during the day, Dad.' While I was out, my wife called and said, 'The police are at the house, come home quickly.' When I arrived home, I learned what had happened from the police.
"HE HAD NOT BEEN USING DRUGS FOR 3 MONTHS"
About 3 years ago, a doctor at Çapa Faculty of Medicine had prescribed a psychiatric medication for Semih, but Semih was not taking the medication prescribed by the doctor. Semih would occasionally consume alcohol at home, such as wine or beer, but he had not been using drugs for about 3 months. This was because he did not have the money to buy drugs.
"YOU CANNOT SEE WHAT I SEE"
When I entered Semih's room in the winter of 2023, the window was open and the room was freezing. As I went to close the window, asking him, 'What's going on, what are you doing?', he came over to me, said 'No, don't close the window,' and pointing to the sky with his hand, said, 'Look and see what you see.' I replied, 'It's dark, I don't see anything.' He then told me, 'You cannot see what I see.'
"HE KEPT TELLING US 'THIS LIFE IS MEANINGLESS'"
While sitting at home this summer, he said, 'Dad, would you be sad if you knew I would be happy where I am going?' I told him, 'Our Lord says I gave the life, I will take it; suicide is a sin.' He replied, 'No, there is no such thing. That is nonsense; you cannot understand me.' I told him, 'Son, you have a life ahead of you.' He said, 'I will not live that long; I will not see those days.' He kept telling us, 'This life is meaningless.' Semih only saw Ayşenur. I do not know if he had any other friends he was seeing.
"THE BUTCHERY TOOLS WERE IN HIS ROOM"
He kept the meat-cutting tools he had acquired from his butchery work in his room. When I wanted to take these tools, he became extremely angry and said, 'Don't you dare touch them, they are mine.' Fearing that he might harm himself if I pushed the issue, I said, 'Okay.'
"MY WIFE CALLED VIA VIDEO CALL ON THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT"
As far as I learned from my wife, she called Semih via video call on her phone around 11:00 on the day of the incident and spoke with Semih and his girlfriend Ayşenur, who was with him at the house. There were no issues.
"HE STARTED ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE 'WHY DID GOD CREATE US?'"
My wife told me that starting from the age of 16, when Semih was confined to the house during the pandemic, he began asking existential questions such as, 'Why did God create us? If He knew we were going to die, why did He create us?'
"HIS TEACHERS WOULD SAY HE WAS VERY INTELLIGENT"
His school teachers said that Semih was an intelligent child; in fact, his high school guidance counselor said, 'This child is talented in software; if you buy him a computer, he can develop himself in this field.' When I told Semih, 'I am going to take that computer for examination,' he threw a fit. He started crying, saying, 'I will not shut myself in at home.' I didn't push him on it. This computer is not in our house. Semih sold the desktop computer piece by piece over the internet 3 years ago.
"HE WAS A BELIEVER UNTIL THE AGE OF 16, HE WOULD PRAY"
I have no information about which websites Semih visited on his computer or phone, who he was in contact with, or whose brainwashing he was subjected to. Before he turned 16, he was a believer. He would also perform his prayers. He even said to me, 'Why don't you pray? You will burn in hell.'"
