The Aegean is shaking like a cradle! A 30-kilometer fault line has become active on Santorini Island

Seismic activity in the Aegean Sea has been ongoing for many hours. Earthquake expert Gerasimos Papadopoulos and Professor of Seismology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Manolis Skordilis made statements to the Greek press.

In his statement, Skordilis noted that the seismic activity in the region is of tectonic origin and that the fault line that has become active is 30 kilometers long.

Papadopoulos stated that the seismic activity has been ongoing since January 24 but intensified as of the morning of February 1, with the number and magnitude of the earthquakes increasing, adding, "So far, our system has recorded and analyzed more than 400 earthquakes, but we are unable to analyze a large number of smaller-scale earthquakes."

Pointing out that the probability of a large-scale destructive effect is low because the seismic movements are occurring underwater, Papadopoulos said, "The earthquakes are occurring in an underwater tectonic trench. For the earthquakes to cause serious damage, they would need to reach a much higher magnitude."

Regarding the possibility of the Santorini Volcano being affected, Papadopoulos stated that, for now, the geophysical conditions to trigger such activity have not formed.

'SEISMIC ACTIVITY IS CONCERNING'

Professor of Seismology Skordilis also pointed out that the seismic activity off the coast of Santorini is concerning.

Stating that a fault line longer than 20 kilometers has become active, Skordilis said that the same line produced a 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 1956.

Regarding the possibility of a larger earthquake, Skordilis said, "It certainly cannot be ignored. It is not a likely scenario, but I can say that this possibility cannot be completely ruled out."
