TÜİK announces household income

TÜİK has announced the latest data regarding average household income. Accordingly, the share of the total income received by the 20 percent group with the highest equivalized household disposable income decreased by 0.6 points compared to the previous year to 48.1 percent, while the share received by the 20 percent group with the lowest income increased by 0.2 points to 6.3 percent.

Gini coefficient estimated at 0.413

The Gini coefficient, one of the measures of income distribution inequality, indicates equality in income distribution as it approaches zero, and deterioration in income distribution as it approaches one. In the calculation of the Gini coefficient, the household disposable income, which is found after deducting taxes paid and regular transfers made to other households or individuals during the income reference period from the sum of the annual incomes obtained by the household and individuals, is used.

The Gini coefficient, which was calculated only based on equivalized household disposable income in previous years, was also calculated using two different methods to see the effect of social transfers on income distribution: excluding all social transfers, and excluding all other social transfers including retirement and widow-orphan pensions.

According to the results of the latest research, the Gini coefficient was estimated at 0.413, a decrease of 0.007 points compared to the previous year. When all social transfers were excluded, the Gini coefficient was estimated at 0.476, and when all other social transfer incomes including retirement and widow-orphan pensions were excluded, it was estimated at 0.423.

The P80/P20 ratio, calculated as the ratio of the share obtained by the top 20 percent of the population with the highest income to the share obtained by the bottom 20 percent with the lowest income, decreased by 0.2 points compared to the previous year to 7.7, while the P90/P10 ratio, calculated as the ratio of the income obtained by the top 10 percent receiving the highest share of income to the income obtained by the bottom 10 percent receiving the lowest share, decreased by 0.5 points to 13.3.

In Turkey, the average annual household disposable income increased by 106.9 percent compared to the previous year to 374 thousand 899 TL. The average annual equivalized household disposable income per capita was 187 thousand 728 TL.

Equivalized household income in single-person households is 223,859 TL

In terms of average annual equivalized household disposable income per capita, the highest income belonged to households consisting of more than one person without a nuclear family, with 231 thousand 206 TL, an increase of 124 thousand 506 TL compared to last year. While the average annual equivalized household disposable income per capita for single-person households was 223 thousand 859 TL, this value was 192 thousand 110 TL for households consisting of a single nuclear family. The household type with the lowest average annual equivalized disposable household income per capita was households consisting of at least one nuclear family and other persons, with 146 thousand 828 TL.

Salaries and wages received the highest share of total income at 48.8 percent.

Salaries and wages received the highest share of total income at 48.8 percent, an increase of 0.3 points compared to the previous year. Entrepreneurial income took second place with 20.8 percent, a decrease of 1.3 points compared to the previous year, while social transfer income took third place with 17.8 percent, showing an increase of 0.2 points compared to the previous year.

While the share of agricultural income within entrepreneurial income was 17.5 percent, the share of retirement and widow-orphan pensions within social transfers was 87.6 percent.

The highest primary job income was calculated for higher education graduates at 309 thousand 721 TL, followed by 240 thousand 470 TL for high school and equivalent school graduates, 168 thousand 407 TL for those with less than high school education, and 106 thousand 478 TL for those who did not graduate from any school. Compared to last year, the highest increase in average annual primary job income was 110.2 percent for those with high school and equivalent level education, and the lowest increase was 88.2 percent for those who did not graduate from any school.

Highest increase in primary job income is in the construction sector at 115.4 percent

When primary job incomes are examined by sector; it was observed that the highest average annual income was in the service sector with 242 thousand 299 TL, and the lowest average annual income was in the agriculture sector with 153 thousand 773 TL. Compared to the previous year; the highest increase in average annual primary job income was observed in the construction sector with 115.4 percent, followed by the industrial sector with 102.0 percent. On the other hand, an increase of 100.2 percent was observed in the service sector and 66.0 percent in the agriculture sector.

Average annual primary job incomes were calculated as 804 thousand 882 TL for employers, 210 thousand 679 TL for the self-employed, 209 thousand 764 TL for wage and salary earners, and 105 thousand 712 TL for daily wage earners. Compared to last year, the highest increase was 104.0 percent for wage and salary earners, and the lowest increase was 82.2 percent for the self-employed.

Average annual primary job incomes were calculated as 804 thousand 882 TL for employers, 210 thousand 679 TL for the self-employed, 209 thousand 764 TL for wage and salary earners, and 105 thousand 712 TL for daily wage earners. Compared to last year, the highest increase was 104.0 percent for wage and salary earners, and the lowest increase was 82.2 percent for the self-employed.
