Striking developments are occurring in the investigation following the brutal murder of two siblings in Sivas. Following the discovery of 22-year-old Umutcan Şimşek and his 16-year-old sister Melisa Şimşek in their home with their hands zip-tied and their throats slit—an event that caused a major public outcry—a detail regarding a missing father has now come to the fore.
FATHER HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE 2020
In the incident that took place at night on the 12th floor of the İdil Apartment D Block in the Kılavuz neighborhood, mother Ayşegül Şimşek found her two children covered in blood upon returning home. While the investigation into the murder continues, information has emerged that the father of the deceased siblings, Uğur Şimşek, has been missing since July 2020.
According to the information obtained, Uğur Şimşek, who was stated to have occasionally worked as a taxi driver and in animal husbandry in Sivas, left home on July 24, 2020, saying he was going out of town, and has not been heard from since. After the disappearance of Şimşek, who was last reported to have been seen in Ankara, family members had appeared on television programs to ask for help.
FAMILY APPEARED ON PROGRAMS, STRIKING STATEMENTS FROM THE MOTHER
His wife, Ayşegül Şimşek, who appeared on television programs covering missing persons at the time, had stated that Uğur Şimşek did not have a steady job, frequently engaged in online correspondence, and had disappeared after the day he said he would go out of town.
“THEIR FATHER RAN AWAY, THE CHILDREN WERE LEFT BEHIND”
Uğur Şimşek's uncle, Fevzi Şimşek, said in his statement, “Their father was missing, and those children were suffering from his absence. There were money issues; they said he ran away because of debt-credit relations. A real man doesn't run away.”
Sharing what he heard about the night of the murder, Fevzi Şimşek said, “Their mother was in the Yıldızeli district that day. The girl was alone at home. Someone with a mask, gloves, and glasses came to the house and killed her first. Then the older brother came, and he killed him too. He slaughtered both of them by slitting their throats.”
SUSPECT SEEN ON CAMERAS
Police teams examining the security cameras of the apartment building where the incident occurred identified a suspect who entered the building around 17:00 and left about 5 hours later. The identity of this person, who was seen wearing a mask, glasses, and a hat, and carrying a bag, is being investigated.
1 PERSON DETAINED
Police teams pursued the suspect in line with information provided by eyewitnesses. While the primary perpetrator of the incident has not yet been clarified, one person considered to be linked to the murder has been detained.
