OCEAN TRACES FOUND ON MARS
Subsurface imaging data collected by China's Zhurong rover has revealed traces of ancient shorelines in the northern plains of Mars.
This research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, strengthens the theory that Mars was once covered by oceans.
Previous research had discovered valley networks and sedimentary rocks on the planet's surface, providing evidence for the existence of once-flowing rivers. However, there were still debates among scientists as to whether oceans existed on Mars.
COASTLINES SHOW SIMILAR CHARACTERISTICS
Dr. Benjamin Cardenas from Penn State University stated that as part of the research, Zhurong was sent to regions near ancient shorelines identified from satellite data. These shorelines on Mars share similar characteristics with ground-penetrating radar data used for coastlines on Earth.
Sloping subsurface materials were found on both planets, features that indicate the shorelines sloped toward the oceans. Dr. Cardenas emphasized that the radar could detect even small changes in sediment sizes.
THE SHORELINE CHANGED DIRECTION OVER TIME
The research revealed that the shoreline on Mars moved toward the ocean over time. Dr. Cardenas interpreted this situation by saying, “The shoreline grew by as much as 1.3 kilometers toward the ocean. This indicates that tides, waves, and a river near the ocean were active in the past.”
SHEDS LIGHT ON THE POSSIBILITY OF LIFE ON MARS
Scientists state that this discovery is of great importance for understanding traces of past life on Mars. Dr. Cardenas emphasized that these shorelines hold clues similar to how life first emerged at the water's edge on Earth, and therefore this region could be an excellent place for future research.
HAS DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS FROM EARTH
Despite their sandy structure, the beaches on Mars are distinctly different from coastlines on Earth. Noting that this environment was quite cold, Cardenas said, “It would be a great discovery to reconstruct these ancient landscapes.”
