DEM Party members Hoşyar Sarıyıldız and Nuriye Arslan, who were elected in the last local elections in the Akdeniz district of Mersin with 36.92 percent of the vote, were detained in the morning hours.
WHY WERE THE INVESTIGATIONS INITIATED?
Under the coordination of the Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the Provincial Security Directorate teams initiated an investigation into individuals accused of "spreading terrorist organization propaganda," "membership in an armed terrorist organization," "violating the Law on the Prevention of the Financing of Terrorism," and "violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911."
DETENTIONS OF DEM PARTY MAYORS AND COUNCIL MEMBERS
Within the scope of the investigation, Akdeniz Mayor Hoşyar Sarıyıldız, Deputy Mayor and Council Member Nuriye Arslan, and Akdeniz Municipality DEM Party council members Özgür Çağlar, Neslihan Oruç, Yakup Danış, and Hikmet Bakırhan were detained.

"The detention of our Akdeniz Municipality Co-Mayors Nuriye Arslan and Hoşyar Sarıyıldız is a clear coup against the will of the people. Even though it is defeated in every election, the government insists on the trustee coup. This insistence is the stripping away of the people's right to vote and be elected.
It is an attack on the urban consensus, which is a key to democracy as a model for living and governing together. While we want to make progress for peace, the will of the people has been reached for once again. We will continue to stand against this trustee mentality everywhere and defend the will of the peoples. We will never back down from the struggle."
WHO IS HOŞYAR SARIYILDIZ?
Hoşyar Sarıyıldız was born in 1991 in the village of Kocapınar in the Cizre district of Şırnak. Sarıyıldız, who migrated to Mersin in 1994, graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Law. A lawyer by profession, Sarıyıldız served on his party's election commissions in Istanbul.
