WHO IS HASAN CEMAL?

Hasan Kaya Cemal was born in Istanbul in 1944. He is a Turkish journalist and author. As the grandson of Cemal Pasha, one of the prominent figures of the Committee of Union and Progress, Hasan Cemal is known for his journalistic career and newspaper columns.

Hasan Cemal's maternal grandmother was a Muslim Georgian, his maternal grandfather was a Kabardian Circassian, his paternal grandfather was Cemal Pasha, who was born in Mytilene, and his paternal grandmother was from Serres.

After graduating from the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University in 1965, Cemal began his journalism career in 1969 in Ankara with the weekly magazine Devrim. He worked for the newspapers Yeni Ortam, Anka News Agency, Günaydın, and Cumhuriyet. He served as the Ankara representative for Cumhuriyet in 1979 and as its editor-in-chief between 1981 and 1992. In 1992, he moved to the newspaper Sabah, where he served as chief columnist until 1998. Later, he wrote articles on domestic and foreign policy for the newspaper Milliyet.

In 2013, he was forced to leave Milliyet due to his articles. In the same year, he became the founder and president of the independent journalism platform P24. He has continued writing his columns for the news site T24 since 2013.

In 2015, Hasan Cemal faced three separate investigations on charges of insulting the then-President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan due to some of his articles. In the 2023 Turkish general elections, he was a parliamentary candidate for the Green Left Party (Yeşiller ve Sol Gelecek Partisi) from Istanbul's 2nd District, but he was not elected.

Hasan Cemal was married first to Necla Aksoy and then to Ayşe Sözeri. He has two children from his two marriages.
