The detention and subsequent arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu are being protested in many cities across Turkey. Following the arrest decision, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from his mayoral post, was sent to Silivri Prison. Saraçhane became the center of the protests in Istanbul. Figures including CHP leader Özgür Özel, Mansur Yavaş, Muharrem İnce, and Ekrem İmamoğlu’s wife, Dilek İmamoğlu, delivered speeches.
The history of Saraçhane, located in Istanbul’s Fatih district, dates back to the Ottoman era. The neighborhood takes its name from the fact that Fatih Sultan Mehmet had a 'saraçhane' (a place where horse care is provided and equipment for horse care is sold) built in this region.
Because the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality building is located in Saraçhane, demonstrations and meetings are held in Saraçhane, in front of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality building. Other politicians are also coming to Saraçhane to visit Özgür Özel.
Özgür Özel stated, "We cannot leave Saraçhane, this square, to anyone."
