Why hasn't Narin's killer been found? Expert explains: 'The family destroyed the evidence'

The investigation conducted by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into the murder of 8-year-old Narin Güran, whose lifeless body was found in Eğertutmaz Creek in the Tavşantepe neighborhood of Diyarbakır, continues on its 44th day.

The identity of the killer or killers has not yet been revealed.

As the investigation continues, former Police Chief Osman Öztürk provided an analysis to Cumhuriyet regarding the Narin murder.

Öztürk stated, "How did an 80-household village enter into such an organized silence? This incident has taken, and will continue to take, its place in the history of investigations as a major event involving a large-scale organization in a murder case within a village, a feudal structure, and a community defined by religious, cultural, tribal, sectarian, and traditional ties."

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE SEARCH OPERATIONS?

“What we need to analyze is whether the search and law enforcement efforts were conducted in accordance with the investigation procedures and techniques of the judicial process and legal standards,” said Öztürk, adding, “The investigation into the disappearance and the search operations were carried out in front of the media and with very large groups of villagers and personnel. This was wrong. Because the presence of so many people, their arrival in the village, their stay, and their presence in the field could have destroyed all evidence, or the traces and signs they left behind could have altered the evidence search and the entire truth.”

"Imagine a village that is standing there, but the houses, vehicles, and streams cannot be examined carefully. The villagers, and especially the suspects of the incident, were involved in the investigation from start to finish, acting alongside law enforcement at every moment; this could have jeopardized the confidentiality and the scope of the incident, and it is understood that it did," they stated.

"THE SUSPECTS' VEHICLES AND HOMES SHOULD HAVE BEEN SECURED"

Pointing out that crime scene investigation and the evidence collection process require attention and care, Öztürk concluded his remarks as follows:

“Evidence collection in Narin’s home and the homes of her relatives should have been conducted thoroughly, considering all possibilities and signs. The suspects' homes and vehicles should have been secured. From the very first day, the possibility that the incident could turn into a murder should have been considered.”

That is why detailed examinations should have been conducted at Narin's home and the homes of her relatives, and the findings should have been sent to the laboratory.

"THE FAMILY DESTROYED THE EVIDENCE"

It was later understood that from the very first days, the family had spent days washing the household items, rugs, covers, and everything that could have contained traces and evidence of the child, thereby destroying the evidence.

Once the indictment is prepared as soon as possible and all evidence and allegations are addressed before the law, all the facts will emerge.
