It has emerged that the "newborn gang," which caused the deaths of 12 babies in Istanbul, operated in collusion with 19 private hospitals. It was determined that the gang collaborated with 112 Emergency Call Center employees to refer babies to these hospitals and generated illicit profits by misrepresenting their health conditions as worse than they actually were. It has been revealed that a gang in Istanbul, acting in collusion with individuals working at the 112 Emergency Call Center, referred emergency newborn patients to the neonatal units of private hospitals they had pre-arranged with, leading to the deaths of the infants.
While 22 members of the gang have been arrested, an indictment has been prepared against 47 suspects.
The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has completed a 494-page indictment following the investigation conducted by the Organized Crime and Terror Crimes Investigation Bureau of the Büyükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
The indictment states that the suspects collected high fees from the Social Security Institution (SGK) by misrepresenting the patients' actual conditions as more severe and ensuring they remained hospitalized for longer than necessary. It also noted that financial gain was obtained by charging some patients' relatives extra fees, and that the majority of the profits were shared among the suspects who were members of the organization and also healthcare workers.
A MINISTER'S HOSPITAL IS ALSO ON THE LIST
The names of the 19 private hospitals with which the gang operated in an organized manner have been revealed.
It was observed that the list includes the Özel Avcılar Hospital, which is owned by former Minister of Health Mehmet Müezzinoğlu.
