Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz: 'The North Anatolian Fault is still active'

The Sea of Marmara was shaken by two separate earthquakes yesterday. The first earthquake occurred at 12:39 PM off the coast of Marmaraereğlisi, Tekirdağ, with a magnitude of 3.2. The second earthquake occurred around 6:00 PM off the coast of Yeniköy. The magnitude of that earthquake was recorded as 3.5.

Speaking to Milliyet, Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz said that the earthquakes demonstrate that the North Anatolian Fault is active.

'THE NORTH ANATOLIAN FAULT IS STILL ACTIVE'

Tüysüz used the following expressions:

"Different values are given for the magnitude of small earthquakes. These earthquakes occurred on the same fault line but in two separate locations. They should not be understood as aftershocks. These earthquakes show that the North Anatolian Fault is still active in the region and is capable of producing earthquakes."
