12punto opens the ‘hospital’ file! The latest situation in 3 of Istanbul’s hospitals...

As 12punto, we visited the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Training and Research Hospital, Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital, and Abdülhamid Han Training and Research Hospital, all located in central areas of Istanbul, on two different days to observe the issues regarding hygiene and accessibility encountered at these facilities.

ABANDONED BUILDINGS AND DISORGANIZED STRUCTURE

At the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Training and Research Hospital in Ataşehir, Istanbul, there is a disorganized layout and several abandoned buildings. While outpatient services are provided in container structures, many buildings within the hospital grounds are closed to use and sit idle.

It is evident that the abandoned buildings located within the hospital premises could lead to negative consequences in the event of a possible earthquake.

The lack of ramps at the entrances to the outpatient clinics in the hospital creates problems for patients using wheelchairs.

CLEANLINESS ISSUES OBSERVED

There are many hygiene problems at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Hospital. Animal feces are observed in many spots in the hospital garden. It is seen that the feces are located very close to the hospital building and have not been cleaned up.

Another area that threatens patient health is the hospital restrooms. In both Fatih Sultan Mehmet Hospital and Abdülhamit Han Hospital, it was observed that the restrooms are far from hygienic and in a state that could pose health risks.

While full urine containers and spider webs were seen in the restrooms, it was noted that the floors were very dirty, the most basic hygiene equipment in the restrooms was broken or damaged, and there were not even paper towels available.

LONG QUEUES AT MANY OUTPATIENT CLINICS

There are long queues in the outpatient clinic sections of the hospitals. While many patients wait in line for long periods at the clinic doors, there are no screens for patients to track their status.
