Giresun Training and Research Hospital has achieved a significant milestone that will enter the world medical literature. Doctors who identified a case characterized by the displacement of all organs and the subsequent development of cirrhosis have named this condition "Giresun Syndrome."

Giresun Training and Research Hospital Head of Gastroenterology Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cumhur Dülger emphasized in his statement that this disease had not been previously defined in the world, saying, "For the first time in the world, we detected cirrhosis due to heart failure in a patient whose organs were all reversed in a mirror image. We introduced this case into the medical literature with the approval of reviewers at national and international congresses and named it 'Giresun Syndrome'."

Dülger stated that while the reverse placement of organs is rarely seen, in this case, all organs were displaced and cirrhosis had also developed, adding, "These patients cannot function at their normal capacity, cannot walk, and their lifespans are shortened. Deterioration in liver functions becomes more pronounced over time, and if appropriate treatment is not provided, the disease can reach life-threatening dimensions. Ten to twelve years after developing cirrhosis, patients require a liver transplant. Some undergo transplantation, others cannot, and their life expectancy is shorter. It is a group of diseases that is life-threatening if not treated appropriately. They live for many years without realizing it, but a time comes. Impairment in liver functions emerges. In this case, intervention is necessary. We have started the necessary treatments for both the heart and the liver. Our patient's condition is currently good," he said.

SYMPTOMS OF GİRESUN SYNDROME

Dr. Gökhan Aydın, who provided information about the symptoms of the disease, which was encountered for the first time in the world and named 'Giresun Syndrome', said, "There are rare diseases, but this is a case seen for the first time rather than just being rare. I have also seen it for the first time in my clinical life. The patient presented to us with symptoms of liver cirrhosis. The most important findings are shortness of breath, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, and fatigue. When we look at the patient's laboratory results in general, we first make our preliminary diagnoses. Then, in the definitions, since all of the patient's organs are displaced and it is a case we have not seen before, we also research the literature. Is there such a patient while we are providing treatment? How have other physicians approached it, what are their treatment realities? Because when we provide a treatment, we do not only act in line with our own views, but we also take into account the practices of other physicians. However, we saw that there was no similar case. Upon this, under the leadership of our professor, Prof. Dr. Cumhur, we tried to explain it by publishing it in the medical literature," he expressed.
