Ophthalmologist Op. Dr. Talha Özdemir provided information on what to consider when choosing sunglasses.
Op. Dr. Özdemir listed the points to consider when selecting sunglasses as follows:
"UV Protection: Choose sunglasses that provide 100 percent UV protection. These glasses provide full protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
Lens Quality: Polarized lenses reduce glare, providing a clearer and more comfortable vision. These lenses are particularly useful when near water or while driving.
Frame Design: Wide and wraparound frames protect the eye area better. This prevents UV rays from entering from the sides.
Eyewear Certifications: Glasses with certifications such as CE and UV 400 indicate that they meet certain standards and can be used safely."
''IT CAN CAUSE CATARACTS''
Stating that eyes can suffer serious damage when exposed to harmful UV rays, Dr. Talha Özdemir said, “UV rays can penetrate all surfaces of the eye, including the cornea and lens. Long-term UV exposure can lead to serious eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even eye cancer. Therefore, wearing sunglasses is not just a fashion statement, but also vital for health.”
''CHILDREN'S EYES ARE MORE SENSITIVE''
Stating that children's eyes are more sensitive to UV rays than adults', Op. Dr. Özdemir said, “For this reason, it is of great importance that children also wear sunglasses. Sunglasses with flexible and durable frames, specifically designed for children, should be preferred.”

Dr. Özdemir said, “In addition to protection from UV rays, it reduces eye fatigue and protects the eyes from dust, wind, and other environmental factors. Furthermore, it supports skin health by preventing the formation of wrinkles around the eyes.”
''AWARENESS OF SUNGLASS USE MUST BE INCREASED''
Emphasizing that awareness should be raised regarding the use of sunglasses, which is one of the most effective ways to protect our eye health, Op. Dr. Özdemir stated, “Remember, using high-quality and UV-protected sunglasses for the health of your eyes is not just a choice, but a necessity.”
