Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Erkan Yetmiş stated that there has been an increase in diarrhea cases in children with the arrival of warmer weather, noting that this infection spreads through human-to-human transmission.
Yetmiş explained what should be done if children experience diarrhea.
"THERE IS AN INCREASE IN DIARRHEA CASES"
Dr. Yetmiş said, "As you know, the summer months are beginning to arrive. Along with this, there is an increase in diarrhea cases. Outbreaks have particularly increased in daycare centers. With the arrival of summer, Adenovirus and Rotavirus infections, in particular, can cause severe diarrhea. These cases of diarrhea can lead to fluid loss and hospitalizations in children. We define diarrhea as an increase in the frequency and softness of stool. Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for the viruses that cause this. We treat it at home with supportive care and probiotics. In particular, a mixture we create by combining yogurt, cornstarch, and banana, in addition to yogurt, ayran, banana, pasta, rice, and boiled potatoes at home, will be beneficial for children. If we feed our children these throughout the day, the frequency of diarrhea decreases."
"IF YOUR CHILD'S DIARRHEA DOES NOT STOP DESPITE THE SUGGESTIONS I MENTIONED..."
Pointing out that a hospital should be consulted if the illness does not pass with supplementary nutrition applied at home, Yetmiş stated, "If your child's diarrhea does not stop despite the suggestions I mentioned, and if there is vomiting, then you must consult a pediatrician. We look at both intravenous treatment and blood tests. If the cause of the diarrhea is bacteria, we start antibiotic treatment. If it is a virus, we carry out treatment through intravenous therapy or hospitalization. If the child loses too much fluid, it can lead to deterioration in blood values, and even to intensive care and death. Therefore, if your child is vomiting a lot or has severe diarrhea, you must consult your doctor."
