Expert issues warning: Mpox virus poses a greater threat to this age group
Stating that mpox, for which the World Health Organization has once again declared a global emergency, is a viral disease transmitted from animals to humans, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sünbül said, "The mpox virus is transmitted from person to person through body fluids, close contact with skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and contaminated bedding and linens. The classic smallpox vaccine also provides partial protection against mpox. For this reason, it is estimated that the population under 50 may be more susceptible to the disease."

Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sünbül has issued warnings regarding the mpox virus.
Explaining how the virus is transmitted, Prof. Dr. Sünbül stated, "As is known, the World Health Organization (WHO) has once again declared a global emergency. The mpox virus is transmitted from person to person through body fluids, close contact with skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and contaminated bedding and linens. The incubation period is generally between 6-13 days, but this period can range from 5-21 days. Transmission can also occur through undercooked meat and other animal products from infected animals. Another route of transmission is sexual contact. Healthcare personnel who do not use appropriate protective equipment and those in close contact with the patient are at risk."
"POPULATION UNDER 50 MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE DISEASE"
Highlighting that sudden fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, and skin rashes are the primary symptoms, Prof. Dr. Sünbül said, "The rash usually begins 1-3 days after the fever. It is less dense on the torso and more concentrated on the face, palms, and soles of the feet. It can be raised or flat on the skin, manifesting as vesicles filled with clear or yellowish fluid. Symptoms resolve on their own after lasting for 2-4 weeks. There is no effective treatment available for the disease. Treatment is primarily focused on symptoms. The classic smallpox vaccine also provides partial protection against mpox. For this reason, it is estimated that the population under 50 may be more susceptible to the disease."
WAYS TO PROTECT AGAINST THE MPOX VIRUS
Prof. Dr. Sünbül said the following regarding ways to protect against mpox:
"In terms of protection, it is important to stay away from people suspected of being ill. Healthcare workers should use protective equipment such as gloves and masks. Attention should be paid to hand hygiene. Avoiding contact with wild animals or staying away from dead animals is recommended. In European countries, patients are quarantined and isolated for 21 days."
