Stating that bipolar disorder is a common mental illness characterized by periods of depression in individuals' lives and manic periods at other times when energy, insomnia, and activity levels increase, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Buse Gökçe provided information.

''IT IS SEEN MORE IN THOSE WITH GENETIC PREDISPOSITION''

Stating that the exact cause of bipolar disorder has not yet been determined, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Gökçe said, “It is thought to emerge as a result of a complex interaction of genetic, neurochemical, and environmental factors. It is known that this disorder is seen more frequently in individuals with a genetic predisposition. Additionally, situations such as stressful living conditions, severe trauma, and the loss of a loved one can also cause bipolar disorder to be triggered.”

''INCREASED ENERGY, EXTREME HAPPINESS..''

Pointing out that the symptoms of bipolar disorder can vary from person to person and can be of different intensities, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Gökçe said, “While increased energy, extreme happiness, feeling important, and agitation stand out among manic symptoms, a lack of energy, feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem, and suicidal thoughts are seen in depressive symptoms.”

''FEELING EXTREMELY CHEERFUL AND ENTHUSIASTIC, INCREASE IN SELF-CONFIDENCE...''

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Gökçe listed the symptoms that can be seen during the manic period as follows:
“Feeling extremely cheerful and enthusiastic, an increase in self-confidence, a decreased need for sleep, rapid speech, spending a lot of money, an increase in sexual urges, alcohol and drug use, impatience, and an increase in inappropriate behaviors.”

''IN THE DEPRESSIVE PERIOD, THERE MAY BE DIFFICULTY SLEEPING, LOSS OF APPETITE, AND SUICIDAL THOUGHTS''

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Gökçe listed the symptoms that can be seen during the depressive period as follows:
“Unhappiness, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, a state of hopelessness, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, suicidal thoughts.”

''THERE MAY BE A TENDENCY TO REFUSE TREATMENT''

Stating that in the mixed period, symptoms of both manic and depressive episodes are seen together, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Gökçe said, “A person may be in a very happy mood and then shortly after become suspicious of themselves. Bipolar symptoms must be present every day and last for at least a week or longer. The manic period usually appears suddenly, and during this period, individuals may not be aware that they are ill and may tend to refuse treatment.”

BIPOLAR DISORDER TREATMENT METHODS

Stating that bipolar disorder can affect quality of life and cause serious problems in functionality, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Gökçe said, “However, with appropriate treatment and support, many people can manage their symptoms and lead a balanced life. The most important factor is the observation of the patient's episodes. In a large portion of the episodes, the patient may not realize what they are feeling, what they are experiencing, and what kind of changes are occurring in them. In such cases, the patient's cooperation with the physician and the support and follow-up of their immediate circle are very important.”

IN DRUG TREATMENT...''

Stating that treatment usually involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy, Specialist Clinical Psychologist Gökçe concluded her remarks by saying, “In drug treatment, mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and antipsychotic drugs can be used. Psychotherapy can help the individual better understand their illness, develop strategies for coping with stress, and improve their quality of life.”
