Frequent yawning during the day, reaching for coffee, zoning out in meetings… All of these can actually be critical signals from the body. A new report published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has revealed that these symptoms point to serious sleep deprivation.
According to experts, insufficient sleep affects individual health while also threatening public safety. Traffic accidents and workplace accidents are among the negative consequences directly linked to sleep deprivation. Mayo Clinic sleep specialist Dr. Eric Olson stated, "Sleep deprivation is a serious health problem with effects seen in every area of society."
AT LEAST 7 HOURS OF SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL
Experts emphasize that at least 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night is necessary for a quality life. Sleeping less than this duration can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, and stroke. Dr. Kristen Knutson from Northwestern University underscored that yawning and lack of focus should be taken seriously, stating, "Someone who sleeps well will not doze off even in a boring meeting."
RISK LEVEL CAN BE MEASURED WITH A SLEEPINESS TEST
While assessments are made using tests such as the 'Epworth Sleepiness Scale,' which is used to evaluate a person's daytime sleepiness, results above 10 points can be a harbinger of a condition requiring expert opinion. Health problems caused by advanced sleep deprivation include drooping eyelids, physical imbalance, dizziness, and sudden impulsive behaviors. According to Dr. Gurubhagavatula, while alcohol and high amounts of caffeine negatively affect sleep quality, it has been determined that late-night screen use also keeps brain waves alert.
