As part of routine inspections in the field of food safety, the possibility of contamination with the bacterium Salmonella was identified in some of Ghirardelli's hot chocolate and frappe powder mixes. Research revealed that the risky products were manufactured from batches for which the raw material was supplied by a milk powder supplier named California Dairies, Inc. The supplier in question had recently issued a recall for its other products for a similar reason.
WHICH PRODUCTS ARE AT RISK?
The recall decision covers powdered hot chocolate and frappe mixes sold in large packages, particularly for restaurants, cafes, and other professional food businesses. However, it was stated that since the company's products are also sold individually through e-commerce sites, home users may also be affected by this situation.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the development to the public in a notice published on April 28 and warned consumers to check the batch numbers of the products.
HOW IS A SALMONELLA INFECTION IDENTIFIED?
Various health problems can occur in people who come into contact with the Salmonella bacterium or consume products containing the bacteria. Experts state that the main symptoms of the infection are high fever, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
WHO IS AT HIGHER RISK?
The infection can be more serious, especially in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While early diagnosis and medical intervention are of great importance for these groups, according to the statement made by the company, it is recommended that purchased products be checked before use and that suspicious products be returned. The company also announced that it has contacted its digital shopping customers through appropriate information channels.
