Bird flu variant detected! Major threat: Is a possible pandemic on the horizon?

A new H5N1 bird flu D1.1 variant, not previously seen in cows, has been detected in a dairy cattle herd in Nevada. Experts stated that this could be a turning point in the spread of the bird flu virus. D1.1 VARIANT MORE DANGEROUS FOR HUMANS

Immunologist Rick Bright said, "If this virus spreads among cows and infects more humans, we could be facing a much more serious epidemic than what we are currently seeing."

Bright also expressed his concerns by stating, "We have never been this close to a bird flu-induced pandemic before."

It was reported that a 65-year-old man who contracted the D1.1 mutation passed away in Louisiana in early 2025, and a teenager infected with the same variant was hospitalized in critical condition in Canada.

SERIOUS THREAT TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS

Juergen Richt, a veterinarian and former director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, said, "Given that this new variant is more virulent for humans, it poses a major risk to public health."

The D1.1 genotype had previously been detected in wild birds, mammals, and poultry in North America.

The detection in Nevada is considered a significant development in the spread of bird flu to cows. If the spread cannot be brought under control, both human health and the livestock industry could suffer major damage.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the H5N1 virus has infected 959 dairy farms to date and led to the death of 156 million poultry. This situation has caused supply shortages, leading to record-high egg prices.
