Glaucoma progresses silently: Regular check-ups can prevent blindness

Glaucoma is known as a serious eye disease that occurs when the optic nerves are damaged as a result of increased intraocular pressure. The most dangerous aspect of this disease is that it usually does not show symptoms in the early stages. Op. Dr. Günerigök stated that most patients consult a doctor when narrowing of the visual field or blurred vision begins, saying, "The vast majority of patients apply to us when their visual field narrows or they start to see blurred. However, this stage is a period when nerve cells are seriously damaged. Unfortunately, the damage caused by glaucoma is irreversible."
Although it is stated that glaucoma can be seen at any age, it was reported that those over the age of 40, those with a family history of glaucoma, those with chronic diseases such as diabetes or hypertension, and those who use cortisone for a long time are in the risk group. Op. Dr. Günerigök said, "Since glaucoma usually progresses slowly and insidiously, having an eye examination once a year is very important, especially for those in the risk group."
REGULAR FOLLOW-UP IS REQUIRED
It was stated that intraocular pressure measurement, visual field testing, and optic nerve head analysis play an important role in diagnosis, and it was emphasized that treatment options include medication, laser applications, and surgical methods. In recent years, it is stated that the sutureless GATT method is preferred in suitable patients. It was reminded that for the success of the treatment, patients should go for regular doctor check-ups and not neglect their medication. Dr. Günerigök stated, "For the treatment to be successful, the patient's regular follow-up and adherence to medication use are very important."
It was pointed out that glaucoma, which ranks high among the causes of preventable blindness worldwide, threatens not only eye health but also general quality of life. Op. Dr. Günerigök stated that regular eye check-ups should not be neglected and emphasized that early diagnosis plays a key role in preventing permanent vision loss.
