Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed a special eye drop using structures called "thylakoids," which they isolated from spinach plants, to combat the problem of dry eye. These cell components, which play a role in photosynthesis, contribute to the production of beneficial antioxidants on the eye's surface when they come into contact with light.
In the method applied in both laboratory and animal experiments, it was observed that thylakoids applied as drops reduced inflammation and increased tear production. Notably, remarkable results were achieved in terms of less damage occurring on the eye surface and the alleviation of irritation.
