Hope for early breast cancer diagnosis: Disease could be detected earlier with a simple blood test

New research has revealed that a microRNA called miR-145 could be used as a biomarker in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Scientists state that this molecule, detected in blood samples, could play an important role in early diagnosis in the future.
While breast cancer is among the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, early diagnosis directly affects the success of treatment and life expectancy. For this reason, scientists continue their work on new biomarkers that can detect the disease at an early stage.
In this context, a new study published has revealed that the microRNA called miR-145 could be an important biomarker candidate for the early diagnosis of breast cancer.
BLOOD SAMPLES OF 300 PEOPLE EXAMINED
In the study conducted by Boran Can Dinçer and Şeref Buğra Tunçer and published in the Eastern Black Sea Journal of Health Sciences, blood-serum samples from a total of 300 people were analyzed.
In the study, RNA isolation was performed from samples taken from 200 breast cancer patients and 100 healthy volunteers. Subsequently, the researchers measured the expression levels of miR-145 using the RT-qPCR method, which is widely used in laboratories.
REMARKABLE DECREASE IN BREAST CANCER PATIENTS
The most important finding of the study was that miR-145 levels were significantly lower in breast cancer patients compared to healthy individuals.
Scientists evaluate that this difference makes miR-145 one of the biomarker candidates that could help detect the disease in its early stages.
WHY ARE microRNAs IMPORTANT?
MicroRNAs are known as small RNA molecules that regulate gene function in cells. Research conducted in recent years shows that these molecules can play an important role not only in the formation of cancer but also in determining the progression of the disease and the response to treatment.
The fact that they can be measured from a blood sample makes microRNAs stand out in terms of non-invasive diagnostic methods.
A NEW ERA MAY BEGIN IN EARLY DIAGNOSIS
Researchers state that miR-145 is one of the important candidates that could contribute to the early diagnosis of breast cancer with a simple blood test in the future. However, it is underlined that this finding must be confirmed by studies to be conducted on much larger patient groups before it can be put into clinical practice.
After new research covering different age groups, breast cancer subtypes, and different stages of the disease, it will become clearer whether miR-145 can be used in diagnostic tests.
EXPERTS WARN
Although the results of the study are promising, experts emphasize that miR-145 is not yet a test used in routine health screenings. For this reason, it is stated that current diagnostic methods, such as mammography and those applied according to physician recommendations, should not be neglected in breast cancer screenings.
The scientific community expects microRNA-based biomarkers to play an important role in the development of personalized cancer treatments and early diagnostic methods in the future.
