Dermatology Specialist Dr. Perihan Aladağ Öztürk, who works at Bursa Çekirge State Hospital, warned citizens against the side effects that may occur on the skin as a result of exposure to sunlight as temperatures rise.
Stating that direct exposure to the sun can lead to conditions such as aging, sun spots, sun allergies, sunburns, and skin cancer, Dr. Öztürk said, "This is where the importance of sun protection comes into play. By protecting ourselves from the sun correctly, we can prevent the development of these side effects."
Underlining that one should avoid being in the sun as much as possible between 11:00 and 16:00, when the sun's rays are at their strongest, Dr. Öztürk added, "After that, we should apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen with at least a 30 protection factor suitable for our skin type, regardless of whether it is summer or winter, 20 or 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and renew it every two to three hours. In addition, we must use hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas when necessary."
Pointing out that sunburns occurring in childhood invite skin cancer in later years, Dr. Öztürk added that the use of hats, sunglasses, and mineral-filtered sunscreens suitable for children's skin should not be neglected for children either.
