How does the meal in a school lunchbox affect children against lead exposure?

With the start of the school year, the question of what to put in children's lunchboxes has returned to the agenda. According to experts, this issue is not limited to daily energy needs; regular and adequate nutrition can also provide a protective support in children's bodies against environmental toxins, especially lead.

Lead is considered a toxic heavy metal for which there is no safe level of exposure for children. According to the World Health Organization, lead, which has no known biological function in the body, can accumulate in various tissues including the brain, kidneys, liver, and bones. Even low levels of exposure in children are associated with negative effects on cognitive development, attention, behavior, and school success.

Children can be exposed to lead through old paint and plumbing, household dust, contaminated soil and water, certain toys, ceramic or metal kitchenware, cosmetic products, and food. The prevalence of hand-to-mouth behavior in young children and the fact that lead absorption from the digestive system can be higher than in adults increases the risk.

WHY IS NUTRITION IMPORTANT?

The report titled “A Meal Against Lead,” prepared by food engineer and academic Dr. Bülent Şık, explains the link between malnutrition and toxic substance absorption with the concept of a “toxicokinetic trap.” According to this, the body can absorb lead through similar biochemical pathways as essential minerals like iron and calcium.

While a well-nourished child can excrete a significant portion of the lead they are exposed to through their digestive system, lead absorption can increase in children who go hungry, skip meals, or suffer from iron, calcium, and zinc deficiencies. For this reason, the report describes adequate nutrition as a “protective shield against lead.”

Food is not an antidote to lead. The primary action that must be taken is to eliminate the source of lead. But a child's nutritional status can affect how much lead is absorbed from the intestines.

Şık emphasizes that a free meal at school is important for this reason, stating that lead absorption from the intestines can increase, especially in children who suffer from hunger, skip meals, or have iron and calcium deficiencies. The report states that this situation deepens biological damage due to poverty among children exposed to the same environmental pollution and turns inequality into a “neurological injustice.”

According to international research and databases cited in the report, it is estimated that the blood lead levels of 650 thousand to 6.3 million children in the 0-14 age group in Turkey may be above critical thresholds. Şık notes that these figures are obtained from scientific modeling rather than direct nationwide blood tests, but they show that the problem is not small.

Stating that there is no screening system in Turkey that regularly monitors blood lead levels in children nationwide, Şık also points to the lack of comprehensive mapping and monitoring studies that would reveal high-risk areas. According to experts, since exposure often does not show externally noticeable symptoms, the “no symptoms, no problem” approach is not sufficient for child health.
