These days, the amount of water to be consumed between iftar and the end of suhoor during Ramadan is of great importance to ensure the body does not remain dehydrated, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramazan Danış issued a warning, saying, "A person needs to take in at least 2.5 liters of water per day."
Nephrology Department Chief and Organ Transplant Responsible Manager Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramazan Danış made statements regarding whether kidney patients should fast during the month of Ramadan.
"KIDNEYS ARE VITAL ORGANS"
Stating that diabetes and hypertension lead to kidney failure and that these patients should fast under physician supervision, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Danış said, "We receive many questions from patients during Ramadan. Should we fast or not? Or what should we pay attention to while fasting? Water consumption is very important during Ramadan. First of all, kidneys are two small but vital organs in the body that perform major tasks. We need to take good care of our kidneys. Because kidneys are the place where many drugs pass through, from the cleansing of the body to the excretion of waste products. Especially in Turkey and Europe, there are two most common causes of kidney failure; diabetes and hypertension. These patients must absolutely monitor their blood sugar and blood pressure."
EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER CONSUMPTION
Expressing that individuals who fast should consume at least 2.5 liters of water per day, spreading it out between iftar and suhoor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Danış stated, "Ramadan actually comes as a rest for the body, beyond its spiritual aspect. But my advice to those who have chronic kidney disease or are facing kidney failure is not to fast. Science also speaks in this direction. The religion of Islam is a religion of ease and tolerance. Therefore, there is no religious call for those with chronic illnesses to fast. The best friend of the kidney is water. A person needs to take in 2.5 liters of water per day. Especially after iftar, rather than drinking water all at once, one should drink 2-3 glasses and spread water consumption throughout the time between iftar and suhoor. During this period, at least 2.5 liters of water must be consumed. Throughout the month of Ramadan, it is necessary to avoid toxic substances, painkillers, and other substances in particular."
