Stating that we are in a season where viral infections are frequently seen, Specialist Dr. Elif Güdeloğlu reported that while the frequency and type of viral infections vary according to the seasons, these infections peak during the autumn and winter months.
Specialist Dr. Elif Güdeloğlu said, “First, croup disease caused by viruses we call 'parainfluenza' begins. Afterwards, we enter the rhinovirus period, which mostly causes the common cold.
Then, the RSV season begins, which we call RSV, and which affects babies under one or two years of age a bit more severely. Now, we are in an important period that we call 'influenza,' known as the flu, which can manifest itself from time to time with more severe symptoms, especially in children under 2 years of age,” she said.
"FLUID CONSUMPTION SHOULD BE INCREASED"
Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr. Elif Güdeloğlu said, “In most viral infections, there are symptoms such as fever, cough, and fatigue; in such cases, children's nutrition and fluid consumption must be increased. Because fluid loss is one of the most important conditions to be considered in children,” she said.
Pointing out that frequent ventilation of rooms, keeping visits in closed areas short, and compliance with mask, distance, and hygiene measures are also important in protecting against respiratory diseases, Güdeloğlu said, “In this process, rooms should be ventilated frequently, visits in closed areas should be kept short, and mask, distance, and hygiene measures should be followed.
Especially since younger children tend to put their hands in their mouths and play games that way, they can easily infect themselves.
For this reason, we must pay great attention to the necessity of frequent hand washing in children. The situation is a bit different for our school-age children. Even if there is a need for hand washing during recess, the priority in this age group is mostly the behavior of running to play. In this case, hand hygiene in children can be provided more practically with cologne or disinfectants that we put in their bags,” she stated.
Emphasizing the importance of nutrition for children who have had viral infections, Specialist Dr. Elif Güdeloğlu said, “The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables during this period is very important for pediatric patients. It should not be forgotten that the Vitamin C support obtained through the recommended nutrition provides benefits in overcoming and protecting against many viral infections,” she said.
