When we crave something sweet, chocolate is one of the first options that comes to mind. Choosing dark chocolate, which has a higher cocoa content, instead of milk chocolate is a frequently recommended method to both curb sweet cravings and support health. But is dark chocolate really innocent? Dietitian and author Nichola Ludlam-Raine explains the unknowns of this popular snack.

WHAT IS DARK CHOCOLATE AND HOW MUCH SHOULD BE CONSUMED?

Dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of cocoa solids and cocoa butter compared to milk chocolate, while containing less sugar. According to experts, dark chocolates containing 70 percent or more cocoa, in particular, have positive effects on health. However, due to its high calorie content, portion control is of great importance. It is recommended to keep the daily consumption amount around 20-30 grams.

Chocolates containing 100 percent cocoa stand out as the healthiest option because they do not contain added sugar and have the highest concentration of antioxidants (flavanols). However, for those whose palate does not prefer it, quality chocolates containing 70-85 percent cocoa can provide similar benefits.

EFFECT ON HEART HEALTH AND WEIGHT LOSS

There is scientific evidence that cocoa flavanols support vascular health and benefit blood pressure and blood flow. Although it is stated that regular consumption provides small improvements in cardiovascular health indicators, dark chocolate should not be seen as a treatment for heart disease or high blood pressure.

As for weight loss, no food has a slimming effect on its own. Dark chocolate is a food with high energy content. Consuming a few small pieces can help with weight management indirectly by preventing sweet cravings. However, excessive consumption can easily lead to excess calorie intake.

CAFFEINE CONTENT AND READING LABELS

The fact that dark chocolate is a healthier alternative to milk chocolate does not mean it can be consumed without limit. It should be consumed with caution due to its high calorie and saturated fat content. Furthermore, dark chocolate contains caffeine, albeit in lower amounts compared to coffee. A 30-gram portion contains approximately 20-30 mg of caffeine. As the cocoa ratio increases, the caffeine level also rises. For this reason, it is recommended that those who have sleep problems or are sensitive to caffeine avoid consuming it later in the day.

Reading labels is also of great importance when choosing chocolate. The shorter the ingredient list, the higher the quality of the product is considered to be. Experts emphasize that a reasonable portion of 20-30 grams per day should not be exceeded to benefit from potential advantages and prevent excessive calorie intake.
