It has been reported that treatment has begun for a second patient with Auto-brewery syndrome, a condition where the body produces its own alcohol, at Giresun Training and Research Hospital.
Giresun Training and Research Hospital Chief Physician Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fazıl Kulaklı provided information regarding the number of patients, examinations, and procedures reached in 2023 during a press conference held at the hospital.
AUTO-BREWERY SYNDROME
Stating that they expect patients from both within the country and abroad through "health tourism," Kulaklı continued his remarks as follows:
"We provided treatment to a patient with a condition called Auto-brewery syndrome, where the body produces its own alcohol. This patient received extensive media coverage with the term 'getting drunk without drinking.' Despite not consuming alcohol, this patient's alcohol levels were high. Currently, Giresun Training and Research Hospital has become the center for the treatment of this disease in Turkey. We have received an offer to become the center for the Middle East as well; we need space for this, but we are making Giresun's name known in health tourism and will continue to do so."
Noting that a patient from İzmir came to Giresun for treatment, Kulaklı said, "There are those coming from Istanbul; our previous patient had also come from Istanbul. 20-30 people from different provinces of Turkey have called us. However, since our capacity is not sufficient to admit and treat all these patients at once, and because we would be unable to provide services to patients requiring normal care, we are admitting these patients one by one."
WHAT CAUSES THE DISEASE?
Auto-brewery syndrome means that carbohydrates, which normally do not turn into alcohol within the body, are converted into alcohol.
This condition usually occurs when there is an imbalance in the gastrointestinal system. It can cause dizziness, nausea, and various symptoms in the individual. It can also affect the person both physically and psychologically.
