New warnings coming for Pfizer and Moderna vaccine labels
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested that warning labels for Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna's Covid-19 vaccines be expanded. Highlighting the risk of heart muscle and heart lining inflammation in males aged 16-25, the FDA pointed to an average of 8 cases per million doses, noting that this risk is rare but significant.

Through official letters dated April 17, 2025, the FDA requested that manufacturers add updated warning information to the labels of Pfizer-BioNTech’s “Comirnaty” and Moderna’s “Spikevax” vaccines. The letters were shared with the public on Wednesday.
WARNING SCOPE EXPANDED
It was known that both vaccines previously contained warnings due to similar health risks; however, previous statements targeted males aged 18-24 for Moderna and 12-17 for Pfizer. The new regulation expands this age range to cover the 16-25 age group for both vaccines.
In the general warning text published by the FDA, it was stated that, “Following the administration of mRNA vaccines in the 2023-2024 period, the highest estimated incidence of myocarditis and/or pericarditis cases was recorded in male individuals aged 16-25.”
8 CASES PER MILLION DOSES
According to FDA data, these conditions are most commonly seen in young people and children under the age of 65. Following the mRNA vaccines administered in the 2023-2024 period, approximately 8 cases per million doses were reported. This rate is considered a notable finding by health authorities.
In the FDA's statement, it was emphasized that while these risks are classified as “rare” and the overall benefit of vaccination outweighs the risks, such warnings based on the principle of transparency are important for protecting public health.
