Nutritionist Ana Luzon stated that those who eat dinner late at night put their health at risk, pointing out that one should be careful about meal times. Luzon emphasized that the biological changes the body undergoes in the evening significantly affect digestive and metabolic functions.

According to Luzon, the most ideal time for dinner is before 9:00 PM. During this time frame, the melatonin hormone, which regulates sleep patterns, is still at low levels, and the pancreas continues to secrete insulin. Thus, carbohydrates and fats can be processed by the body more easily.

However, as 10:00 PM approaches, the biological rhythm in the body begins to change. While melatonin production increases, glucose tolerance decreases and gastric emptying slows down. Luzon says these hours are no longer “completely safe,” but do not yet carry high risk.

The situation changes at 11:00 PM and beyond. Stating that eating at these hours should be “virtually forbidden,” Luzon said, “At these hours, melatonin levels are quite high, and a temporary state of physiological insulin resistance occurs in the body. Because the body struggles to process glucose, blood sugar and triglyceride levels rise. This situation both triggers fat accumulation and leads to inflammation in the body.”

Experts recommend eating dinner as early as possible for healthy nutrition and weight control.
