Prolonged television viewing in midlife linked to brain health changes years later

New research has shown that frequent television viewing in midlife may be linked to brain changes associated with memory loss and dementia 20 years later.

According to a report by Sözcü, it has been determined that individuals who watch television for long periods in midlife may be more likely to show certain negative findings related to brain health years later. & The study, published in the scientific journal “Alzheimer's & Dementia: Journal of the Alzheimer's Association,” indicated that there may be a link between time spent in front of the television and brain changes associated with memory loss, vascular damage, and dementia.

The research reported that time spent watching television is associated with a decline in brain health in later years; however, the same connection was not observed for time spent sitting at work. The findings raise the possibility that not all sedentary time may have the same effect on the brain.

The study showed that there may be a link between television viewing habits and brain health findings in later years.

APPROXIMATELY 1,700 PEOPLE MONITORED

The study examined data from approximately 1,700 adults who participated in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, which began between 1987 and 1989. The average age of the participants at the start of the study was 53. These individuals reported through surveys how often they watched television in their spare time and how much of their workday they spent sitting.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans conducted approximately 20 years later revealed differences in certain brain regions between those who watched television frequently and those who stated they watched “never” or “rarely.” Participants who reported watching television “very frequently” showed volume loss, particularly in regions associated with memory and the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.

The frequency of participants' television viewing was recorded via survey at the beginning of the study.

According to the findings, smaller volumes were also observed in the frontal and occipital lobes, which play a role in functions such as planning, attention, decision-making, and visual processing. The MRI images also indicated a higher prevalence of bright areas known as “white matter hyperintensities.” Such findings can be associated with damage to the small blood vessels of the brain and are considered significant in terms of aging, stroke risk, cognitive decline, and dementia.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ALONE DOES NOT EXPLAIN IT

Researchers also accounted for health-related variables such as physical activity level, diabetes, body mass index, and smoking and alcohol use. Despite this, the link between television viewing and brain changes persisted. This result suggests that the relationship cannot be explained solely by less exercise or other health risks.

Researchers pointed out that television viewing should not be equated with other sedentary activities.

However, the study does not prove that watching television directly causes dementia on its own. In the study, television viewing habits were based on the participants' own reports. Furthermore, because MRI scans were not performed at the beginning of the research, the progression of changes in each participant's brain over the years could not be tracked directly.

The research also raised the point that sedentary activities may engage the brain at different levels. While reading, working, creating, or socializing are done while sitting—similar to watching television—they may not have the same effect in terms of mental stimulation. It was emphasized that the findings were more pronounced in men, but the reason for this is not yet known and further research is needed.

Experts state that the findings show a correlation, not causation, and that more studies are needed.
