The protective password against kidney stone formation

Experts point out that conditions such as pain during urination, blood in the urine, nausea or vomiting, frequent urination, fever, and chills are symptoms of kidney stone disease, and note that stones can be eliminated through surgical procedures.

Prof. Dr. Halil Başar stated that starting and ending the day with water is very important to prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Prof. Dr. Halil Başar, Education and Administrative Chief of the Urology Clinic at Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital, made statements regarding kidney stone formation, how stones are broken, and how kidneys should be protected.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CAUSES IN KIDNEY STONE FORMATION

Stating that kidney stone formation should be divided into internal and external causes, Başar said, “Internal causes are related to the body's own structure. We must also add genetics to this, but despite that, the body's own metabolism plays a greater role in this regard. As for external causes; those living in hot climates consume more body water. In addition, the daily urine volume perhaps decreases a little more. Because their minute urine filtration rate drops, they can be more prone to stone formation.”

"TENSION IN THE URINARY TRACT ACTS AS A STIMULUS IN THE FORM OF PAIN"

Noting that small stones in the kidney can manifest themselves as severe pain and bleeding in the urine, Başar said, “Stone pain is actually a pain we describe as colic-style. It comes suddenly and is of a writhing nature. That colic pain decreases after lasting about 30 minutes. The reason for this is that the stone causes tension in the urinary tract. Those tensions act as a stimulus for us in the form of pain. Besides this, because that stone scratches the urinary tract wall, it can also cause minor bleeding there. Therefore, we can see bleeding in the urine in those suffering from stone pain.”

A ONE-AND-A-HALF-HOUR SURGERY

Emphasizing that they can break and remove large 2-centimeter stones formed in the kidney through one-centimeter channels opened in the back region, Prof. Dr. Başar said, “The patient can get rid of all their stones within a surgical process of about one and a half hours. If the stones are smaller than two centimeters and are in the kidney, then we enter the urinary tract, from there we go to the bladder, and we can enter the mouth of the canal that opens from the kidney to the bladder and go up to the kidney.

When we go up to the kidney, we see the stone and turn that stone into dust again. The body then expels that pulverized stone with urine. Sometimes a 3-4 millimeter portion of the stone can remain as fragments. To ensure they pass easily, we place a catheter that will provide that drainage from the kidney to the bladder. Thanks to that catheter, those small stones can also fall from the kidney to the bladder.”

"START THE DAY WITH WATER, END IT WITH WATER"

Başar continued as follows:

“I think starting and ending the day with water, and not leaving the kidneys and the body dehydrated, is the primary principle we should keep in mind and apply in a protective approach to stone formation. I recommend this to all my patients,” he said.

Başar stated that stones vary according to their structure, but 90 percent are composed of calcium oxalate stones. Başar underlined that to prevent the recurrence of stone diseases, nutritional habits should be regulated primarily with vegetables and fibrous foods. Additionally, Başar noted that consuming plenty of fluids and maintaining an ideal weight are important.
