Record rise in COVID-19-related deaths in Taiwan

The rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths observed in Taiwan in recent days has begun to cause concern. The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has shared figures with the public regarding the current state of the epidemic in the country.
It was reported that 14 people lost their lives due to COVID-19 between August 4 and August 10. This number was recorded as the highest weekly death toll of the ongoing COVID-19 wave in the country.
Applications to healthcare facilities due to COVID-19 have also risen significantly. A total of 24 thousand 645 people applied for outpatient treatment and emergency services in the week of August 2-8. It was reported that there was a 27.6 percent increase in this number compared to the previous week.
According to the data released by the CDC, the number of COVID-19 cases with severe complications has risen to 337 since October 2025, and 42 of these cases have resulted in death.
The majority of severe patients, approximately 74 percent, are aged 65 and over. Furthermore, it was stated that 84 percent of the cases had one or more chronic illnesses. Another detail highlighted was that 89 percent of the serious cases consisted of individuals who had not received the current season's COVID-19 vaccine.
The CDC reported that the COVID-19 vaccine stock in the country is at the level of approximately 140 thousand doses. It is planned that approximately 37 thousand doses of the vaccine, which will expire before September 9, will be removed from cold storage and delivered to citizens through local governments.
