Özlem Güven Yıldız, a 34-year-old philosophy teacher and mother of one living in the Alanya district of Antalya, learned to her surprise that she was pregnant with her second child while weighing 156 kilograms.
Doctors and friends in the district advised her to terminate the pregnancy, telling her, "You are gambling with your life; you are carrying a bomb that is ready to explode at any moment."

Yıldız, who very much wanted to hold her second baby in her arms, did not give up and began researching obesity in pregnancy. In tears, Yıldız reached out to Professor Selahattin Kumru, an Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist in Antalya.

Despite all the risks, during the pregnancy process managed by Kumru and his team, Özlem Güven Yıldız gave birth to a healthy baby boy weighing 3 kilograms and 540 grams via cesarean section, despite reaching 172 kilograms. After a 10-day neonatal intensive care period, Yıldız was discharged in good health with her baby and shared her happiness with her doctor, Kumru, who successfully managed the process.

THEY SAID 'YOU ARE CARRYING A BOMB'

The happiness she felt was reflected on her face as Özlem Güven Yıldız recounted that she had her first child at the age of 26 and was not that heavy at the time.

Expressing that being pregnant with her second baby was a surprise to them as well, Yıldız said, "We found out very early, it was 4-5 weeks. My doctor said it was a very risky pregnancy for both me and the baby, and therefore I should terminate it. I didn't want to terminate it because no one could guarantee that I would be able to get pregnant again. Later, I reached out to Professor Selahattin Kumru. In fact, I was crying when I first called him. My previous doctor had said, 'You are gambling with your life; you are carrying a bomb that is ready to explode at any moment.' Because the peak phase of pregnancy is actually 6-7 months later; that's when he talked about high blood pressure, sudden infant death, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-related death, and many other things.

He had said what he needed to say as a physician. I then applied to perinatology. We moved this process forward with Selahattin, we reached the 35th, 36th week, and we delivered in a planned manner; the surgery process was very challenging. Afterward, my doctor and his team took all the necessary precautions against everything, including the difficulties I had in standing up due to my weight," she said.

'I AM CURRENTLY 158 KILOGRAMS'

Emphasizing that she started the pregnancy process at 156 kilograms and finished it at 172 kilograms, Yıldız stated, "I am currently 158 kilograms, and I hope to drop back to double digits within these 6 months. It was really difficult. I had a risk of embolism; we had discussed all of these. Many precautions were taken, both during and after the surgery. My baby stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit for 10 days because his lung development did not complete exactly the same way as his peers due to my gestational diabetes. That process also went very well; we are both healthy now," she said.

Offering advice to expectant mothers who are overweight, Yıldız said, "I don't think this process should be terminated based on the negative remarks of a single person. More research should be done. We managed this process very well; everything progressed beautifully, first thanks to God and then thanks to them. Of course, we experienced negative situations, but we overcame them," she said.

'IT WAS QUITE RISKY'

Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist Professor Selahattin Kumru stated that when his patient first consulted them, the pregnancy was in its early stages and they were facing a weight higher than normal.

Pointing out that being overweight during pregnancy increases the likelihood of certain problems, Kumru said, "It increases the probability of issues such as gestational diabetes, pregnancy-related hypertension, preeclampsia, the baby's lungs not developing well, and an increased risk of sudden infant death. The recommendation to terminate the pregnancy..."
