Neurology Specialist Dr. Ömür Atacan Atasoy pointed out that caffeine consumption should be gradually reduced before fasting to prevent headaches and migraines caused by the fast.
Issuing warnings regarding migraines, which become even more unbearable with hunger during the month of Ramadan, Specialist Dr. Ömür Atacan Atasoy offered recommendations for spending Ramadan without migraines.
Emphasizing that particular attention should be paid to caffeine consumption, Specialist Dr. Atasoy said, "Those who consume caffeinated foods and drinks very frequently may experience withdrawal syndrome due to not being able to consume food and drink for longer than 16 hours. This situation can trigger headaches and migraines. To avoid experiencing withdrawal syndrome, they should reduce their daily amount before fasting and consume it in small amounts from the evening until suhoor time to maintain a stable blood level."
Explaining ways to prevent migraines, Specialist Dr. Atasoy stated, "Fasting-related headaches can be successfully prevented with long-acting drugs such as naproxen or similar medications. If the fasting-related headache shows migraine-like characteristics in a throbbing style or occurs in a person with a history of migraines, a short preventive treatment can be carried out with painkillers called rizatriptan or eletriptan, as recommended for menstrual migraines."
