SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth), the incidence of which has been increasing rapidly in recent years, is a health problem that occurs due to the excessive proliferation of bacteria in the small intestine. This condition negatively affects quality of life and manifests itself with symptoms such as abdominal bloating, gas, and chronic fatigue. Gastroenterologist Prof. Dr. Atakan Yeşil shares important information about the causes, symptoms, and prevention methods of SIBO.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF SIBO?

One of the most important causes of SIBO is unhealthy eating habits. Factors such as excessive carbohydrate consumption, fast food, and carbonated drinks can disrupt the bacterial balance in the intestines and lead to problems. Additionally:

Long-term use of stomach-protecting medications,

Excessive consumption of lactose in milk and dairy products,

High-fat foods are also among the factors that trigger the development of SIBO.

Prof. Dr. Yeşil says, “Carbohydrates are broken down by bacteria in the intestine, creating carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane gas. This leads to common complaints such as bloating and gas.”

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SIBO?

The main symptoms of SIBO are as follows:

Abdominal bloating and gas,

Chronic fatigue,

Diarrhea or constipation,

Abdominal pain,

Forgetfulness and stress due to B12 deficiency.

The vast majority of patients state that their abdomens feel “bloated like a balloon” during the day. In addition, symptoms such as itching and dryness of the skin can also be seen.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PROCESS

In the diagnosis of SIBO, the carbohydrate breath test or the method of measuring bacterial density via small intestine aspiration is used. Treatment generally involves:

Antibiotic therapy,

Probiotic and vitamin supplements.

However, symptoms can recur after treatment in approximately 40 percent of patients. For this reason, it is of great importance to identify the underlying factors that cause SIBO.

12 EFFECTIVE MEASURES AGAINST SIBO
