Gamze Kalelioğlu from the Nutrition and Diet Department of VM Medical Park Kocaeli Hospital made statements about the benefits of ginger for the human body according to scientific studies.
'CAN PREVENT NAUSEA'
Touching upon the fact that ginger can also be beneficial against nausea and vomiting, Kalelioğlu said, "It has been proven that the daily use of 1 gram of ginger prevents nausea and vomiting and is also effective against dizziness. When studies are examined, it is proven that the use of ginger during pregnancy has no negative effect on the baby and is quite effective in preventing nausea and vomiting experienced in the early stages. Still, it is beneficial to consult your doctor to determine the dosage when using it during pregnancy," she said.
'REDUCES SIDE EFFECTS IN CANCER TREATMENT'
Discussing the relationship between ginger and cancer, Kalelioğlu shared the following information:
"It has been observed that ginger reduces the side effects caused by various treatment methods such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy in cancer treatment. It has been observed that it has a protective effect against organ toxicity due to chemotherapy, has an anti-cancer effect thanks to the gingerol and shogaol it contains, and suppresses the growth of cancer cells. In one study, it was observed that 530-milligram ginger capsules given before chemotherapy reduced chemotherapy-induced nausea," she stated.
Stating that the antibacterial effect of ginger has been proven in studies, Gamze Kalelioğlu said, "It has been observed that its antimicrobial effect increases as the dosage of ginger increases, which is why its traditional use with honey in the treatment of colds and flu has also been observed to be beneficial. Other studies have observed that ginger significantly lowers plasma and LDL cholesterol levels and significantly reduces pain in knees with osteoarthritis (calcification).
Due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, a positive effect has been observed in joint inflammation and musculoskeletal disorders. It is recommended that patients with gallstones or those at risk of hemorrhage (bleeding) use it under medical supervision. Furthermore, many studies have proven that the daily use of 2-4 grams of ginger can relieve exercise-induced muscle pain and prevent muscle loss.
It has been observed that when used in very high doses, it causes dermatitis and heart rhythm disturbances, but when used in normal doses, it does not have serious side effects, although it may cause side effects such as heartburn and diarrhea. The recommended daily ginger consumption amount has been determined as 1-2 grams/day of powdered ginger. For ginger tea, it is recommended to consume 2 cups daily," she said.
